Sun City South Africa: Casino Resort Guide

Sun City is a casino and resort complex about two hours northwest of Johannesburg, South Africa, near the Pilanesberg game reserve. Opened in 1979, it was originally built in the then-independent homeland of Bophuthatswana to circumvent apartheid-era gambling restrictions in South Africa proper. Today it is one of the largest entertainment destinations in southern Africa.

The complex

Four main hotels: The Palace of the Lost City (the iconic luxury 5-star, often appearing on lists of the worlds most striking hotels), The Cascades Hotel (5-star, more contemporary), Sun City Hotel (4-star, the original property), and Soho Hotel (entry-level option). Combined room count exceeds 1,200.

Two casinos: the Sun City Casino in the main complex and the Soho Casino in the entertainment center. Combined: roughly 850 slots and 40+ table games.

Beyond gambling

Sun City is famous for amenities beyond the casino floor. The Valley of Waves: a giant artificial wave pool and water park. Two championship golf courses: the Gary Player Country Club and the Lost City Golf Course (with live crocodiles in the water hazards). The Crocodile Sanctuary, the Sun Park concert venue, and combined access to Pilanesberg game reserve.

Wildlife combination

The proximity to Pilanesberg National Park makes Sun City unusual among casino destinations. Half-day or full-day game drives in Pilanesberg are easy add-ons. Big Five wildlife is present including elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, and Cape buffalo.

Getting there

From Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport: 2 hours by car or shuttle. Sun City has its own small airfield for charter flights. The drive from Johannesburg is straightforward on good roads.

When to visit

South African winter (May-September) offers cooler weather and the best wildlife viewing in nearby Pilanesberg. Summer (December-March) is hot and rainy but appeals for the water park. School holidays bring South African families and price increases.
