Foxwoods Resort Casino Connecticut

Foxwoods Resort Casino opened in 1992 and quickly became one of the largest casinos in the world by gaming floor space. Located in rural eastern Connecticut and owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, Foxwoods has anchored New Englands tribal gaming industry for over three decades.

The casino

The Foxwoods complex includes six casinos under one roof, each with a distinct atmosphere: Grand Pequot Casino, Fox Tower Casino, Foxwoods Park Avenue Casino, MGM Grand at Foxwoods (the formal name has changed), Casino Cesars, and the High Stakes Bingo and Poker rooms. Combined: around 4,800 slot machines and 250+ table games.

Hotels

Multiple hotel towers within the complex: Grand Pequot Tower (the original luxury tower), Fox Tower, Two Trees Inn (lower-cost rural setting), and the Great Cedar Hotel. Combined room count exceeds 2,200.

Beyond gambling

Tanger Outlets at Foxwoods: a major outlet shopping center directly attached. Multiple restaurants including David Burkes Prime, Centrale by Geoffrey Zakarian, and casual dining. Fox Theatre hosts major touring concerts and shows. The Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center documents the tribes history.

Comparison to Mohegan Sun

Foxwoods and nearby Mohegan Sun (10 miles away) are the two major Connecticut tribal casinos. Mohegan Sun is generally considered to have a more modern aesthetic; Foxwoods is the older and slightly larger of the two. Many regional visitors play both.

Getting there

Rural location: about 2 hours from New York City and 90 minutes from Boston by car. From Hartford: 1 hour. There is no nearby commercial airport; visitors fly into Hartford or Providence and drive. Bus services from major Northeast cities run regularly.

What to expect

Less of the Las Vegas spectacle; more of a regional gaming destination. The complex is enormous and easy to get lost in. Wait times at popular slots and tables can be significant on weekend evenings. Off-peak weekdays offer notably more space and faster service.

Sports betting

Connecticut legalized sports betting in 2021, and Foxwoods operates a full sports book. Popular for in-person sports betting from across New England.
