When Is the Best Time to Visit Santorini?
Santorini”s peak season is July and August, but those are arguably the worst months to visit. The shoulder months on either side offer the same blue-and-white postcard scenery with significantly fewer crowds, more comfortable temperatures, and lower prices.
Best windows
Late May to mid-June: warm but not hot, full ferry schedule, restaurants and tour operations all open, crowds noticeably thinner than summer peak.
Mid-September to early October: still warm enough for swimming, fewer cruise ships visiting, hotel prices dropping back to spring levels, longer comfortable evenings.
July-August: peak
Daily highs frequently exceed 35 degrees Celsius. Cruise ships disgorge thousands of day-trippers into Fira and Oia. Hotel prices peak at 2-3x shoulder rates. The famous Oia sunset spot becomes uncomfortably crowded. Restaurants book out weeks in advance.
If your dates only allow July-August, the experience is still beautiful, but plan around the heat (siesta during midday, sightseeing early morning and evening) and book everything months in advance.
Winter (November to March)
Genuinely off-season. Many restaurants and hotels close entirely. Ferry schedules shrink. Some attractions close. The trade-off: an island showing its quieter, more contemplative face, with rates 50-70% below summer.
Caldera-view hotels remain stunning year-round, and a winter visit to Santorini has its own appeal if you do not need to swim and value solitude over services.
April and early May
The island wakes up. Wildflowers bloom across the inland fields. Most services open by mid-April. Weather is mild but not yet warm enough for sea swimming. Excellent for hiking the Fira-to-Oia trail without summer crowds.
Late October to early November
Last viable swimming window. Sea is still warm from summer. Most services still operating. Prices dropping fast. A quiet, melancholic time on the island that some travelers prefer to peak season.
