When Is the Best Time to Visit the Maldives?

The Maldives has two distinct seasons: the dry season from November to April, and the wet season from May to October. Both have their cases. The dry season is more reliable for sun, but it is also crowded and expensive. The wet season is cheaper, less crowded, and often more interesting than its name suggests.

Dry season (November to April)

The classic Maldives experience: blue skies, low humidity, calm seas, perfect snorkeling visibility. December through February is the absolute peak, with the highest prices, the busiest resorts, and the most stable weather. November and April are the shoulder months with similar weather and slightly lower prices.

Air temperatures sit at 27-31 degrees Celsius. Water temperatures are around 28 degrees Celsius year-round.

Wet season (May to October)

Daily afternoon thunderstorms are common but usually short. Mornings often start clear; storms build through the afternoon and clear by evening. Resort prices drop 30-50% compared to peak season. Crowds drop dramatically. The reefs and lagoons remain warm and inviting even in the rain.

The best months within wet season: June and September are notably less rainy than the deep wet months of July-August.

Special considerations

Surfing is best from June to October, when southwest swells produce the best waves at the southern atolls. Big game fishing is best from December to April. Diving is good year-round, but visibility is sharpest in the dry season.

Manta and whale shark season

Manta rays and whale sharks are visible year-round at certain atolls, but the best months for guaranteed sightings are May through November (wet season) at the eastern atolls, and December through April (dry season) at the western atolls. If marine life is your focus, plan accordingly.

The price-versus-weather decision

If your budget allows it and you want guaranteed sun, book December to March. If you are willing to plan around weather and want significantly lower prices, the May-September window offers excellent value with weather that is far better than the rainy reputation suggests.
