Is Dubai Expensive to Visit?
Dubai”s reputation as an expensive destination is half-true. Five-star hotels, Michelin-starred dining, and luxury experiences are genuinely premium-priced. But mid-range and budget travel in Dubai is more affordable than many travelers expect.
Hotels: the widest range
Budget: 3-star hotels in Deira or Al Barsha from USD 50-80 per night. Mid-range: well-located 4-star hotels in JBR or Downtown from USD 120-200. Luxury: Burj Al Arab, Atlantis, and similar properties from USD 500-1,500+ per night. The gap between mid-range and luxury is enormous.
Food: easy to control
A meal at a casual restaurant or food court costs USD 8-15 per person. Mid-range restaurants average USD 25-50 per person with drinks. Fine dining starts at USD 100+ per person. Many of the city”s best meals are at the lower end: shawarma joints, Pakistani biryani spots, and Filipino diners deliver excellent food cheaply.
Transport: cheap
The metro is excellent and very affordable, with single fares around USD 1-3. Taxis are reasonable by Western standards (around USD 0.65 per km). Renting a car for day trips is around USD 30-50 per day. Avoid the Dubai-style chauffeur services unless you specifically want them.
Sightseeing
Many top sights are free or low-cost. Walking the Marina, the JBR beach, and Old Dubai costs nothing. The Burj Khalifa observation deck is around USD 40-80 depending on the level. The Dubai Frame is around USD 14. Desert safaris range from USD 60-150 depending on quality.
Where Dubai gets expensive fast
Alcohol (heavily taxed; expect USD 12-18 for a beer in a hotel bar). Brunches at five-star hotels (USD 100-200 per person). Helicopter tours, yacht rentals, and the high-end nightclub scene. If you skip these, Dubai becomes a reasonable mid-range destination.
