How to Tip at Casinos

Tipping practices at casinos vary dramatically by country. US casinos depend heavily on tips as part of staff income; European casinos traditionally do not tip dealers; Asian casinos vary by destination. Knowing local customs avoids both undertipping (rude in US contexts) and overtipping (sometimes confusing or unwelcome).

US casino tipping

Dealers (toking): tip USD 1-5 per significant win, or place a “for the dealer” bet alongside your bet (if your bet wins, the dealer wins the tip bet). Frequent table players typically tip USD 10-25 per hour of play through some combination of methods.

Cocktail waitresses: tip USD 1-2 per drink, often more for the first round to encourage prompt service. Tipping waitresses well is the simplest way to ensure your drinks arrive quickly.

Slot attendants (jackpot handlers): tip 1-5% of jackpots that require manual payout (jackpots typically over USD 1,200 in US casinos). For very large jackpots, USD 100-500 tips are common.

Valet: USD 2-5 when retrieving your car, sometimes more at premium properties.

Bell staff: USD 1-2 per bag.

Hotel housekeeping: USD 3-5 per night, left on the pillow.

Why US tipping matters

US casino dealers and waitresses have base pay near minimum wage; tips can double or triple their effective income. Casinos do not significantly subsidize wages with the assumption tips will. Skipping tips is functionally a wage cut to working staff.

European casino tipping

Most European casinos prohibit dealers from accepting tips, or strongly discourage the practice. The Casino de Monte-Carlo, Casino di Venezia, and Casinos Austria network are examples where dealers are paid regular wages without tip dependence.

Cocktail service: small tips appreciated but not expected. Round to the nearest euro or leave small change.

Valet and concierge: small tips for service, similar to general European hotel tipping practices.

Macau and Singapore

Tipping is not the cultural norm in either jurisdiction. Dealers do not expect tips. Cocktail service does not depend on tips. Generally, follow the no-tipping convention.

Exceptions: some premium private salons in Macau have informal tipping practices. Hotel concierge services accept tips for special arrangements.

Australia

Tipping at Australian casinos is unusual but appreciated for exceptional service. Dealers and waitresses are paid living wages and do not depend on tips. Small tips for excellent service are fine.

UK

Dealers traditionally cannot accept tips at most UK casinos. Cocktail service tipping is at the smaller end of US norms (round to the nearest pound, small percentages).

Universal advice

Observe what regular local players do before tipping aggressively. Tipping practices reflect local labor and wage norms; respect them rather than imposing US-style tipping in non-US contexts.

If you are not sure, ask a hotel concierge or casino host before your visit. Casino hosts are happy to explain local conventions.

Carrying tip money

Bring small bills or change for tipping. Trying to tip from a USD 100 bill creates awkwardness. Carry USD 5-20 in small bills specifically for tipping situations.
