What to Wear to a Casino

Casino dress codes vary dramatically by destination, property type, and time of day. Vegas casino floors accept nearly anything; Monte Carlo expects formal evening wear in the historic salons. Knowing what to wear avoids the discomfort of being underdressed at premium properties or oddly overdressed at casual ones.

Las Vegas (anything goes daytime, smart casual evening)

Daytime on the Strip: shorts, t-shirts, and sandals are entirely accepted at casino floors of most properties. Evening at premium restaurants and lounges: smart casual minimum, often “no athletic wear” enforced. Dress codes at premium nightclubs (XS, Marquee, Hakkasan) typically require button-up shirts and dress shoes for men, dressy attire for women.

Monte Carlo (formal at the historic casino)

Casino de Monte-Carlo in Monaco enforces strict dress code, especially in evening hours and the private salons (Salon Privee). Jacket required for men, no shorts, no sandals, no athletic wear. Other Monaco casinos (Casino Cafe de Paris, Sun Casino) are more relaxed but still smart casual minimum.

European casinos generally

Smart casual minimum at most European casinos. Some properties (especially historic spa-town casinos in Germany, Austria, and Italy) require formal evening wear. The Casino Baden-Baden in Germany requires jacket for men; the Casino di Venezia enforces smart casual; French Casino Barriere properties expect smart casual minimum.

Macau (varies by property)

The newer Cotai Strip mega-resorts (Venetian, Wynn Palace, City of Dreams) enforce relatively casual dress codes during the day, smart casual minimum in the evening. Older peninsula casinos sometimes enforce stricter dress requirements. Private VIP rooms typically require formal attire regardless of property.

Singapore (smart casual strictly enforced)

Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa both enforce smart casual minimum strictly. No shorts, no flip-flops, no athletic wear, no torn clothing. Singapore enforcement is more strict than US casinos generally.

What “smart casual” means in practice

For men: collared shirt or polo, long pants (jeans usually accepted, sometimes not), closed-toe shoes (loafers, dress shoes; some properties allow clean sneakers). No t-shirts, no shorts, no athletic wear.

For women: dress, skirt, or pants with a blouse or top. Closed or open-toe shoes generally fine (no athletic shoes at premium properties). Avoid beachwear, athletic wear, or excessively casual attire.

What “formal” means at high-end properties

For men: jacket required. Tie sometimes required at the most formal properties (rare in 2026, more common historically). Dress shoes always.

For women: cocktail dress or equivalent formal wear. Heels or formal flats. Modest neckline at conservative properties (more common in Asian casinos than European).

Universal rules

Always bring a backup outfit when traveling for casino visits. Hotel concierge services can advise on specific property dress codes. When in doubt, dress one level more formally than you think necessary; you can always loosen tie or remove jacket.

What never works

Beachwear at any casino. Athletic wear (gym clothes, hoodies, sports jerseys) at any premium property. Open-toe sandals for men outside Vegas-type casual environments. Visible undergarments at any casino. Clothing with offensive language or imagery.
