France Casinos: Beyond Monaco
France has more land-based casinos than any other European country, with approximately 200 licensed properties. French casino regulation requires casinos to be located in specific categories of communes: spa towns, seaside resorts, climatic resorts, and certain larger cities. The result is a casino landscape distributed across French tourism destinations rather than concentrated in major urban centers.
The major French casino destinations
Cannes (3 casinos): casinos serve the Cote d”Azur tourism industry, with the Casino Croisette in the Hotel Barriere being the most famous. Nice (multiple): including the historic Casino Ruhl. Deauville (Normandy coast): the Casino Barriere Deauville is one of Europes most-prestigious. Biarritz (Atlantic coast): the Casino Barriere Biarritz overlooks the ocean. Evian-les-Bains (Lake Geneva spa town): historic spa-and-casino combination.
Paris area
Paris itself has restricted casino gambling for centuries, but the surrounding area has casinos. The recently opened Pleinair casinos and the Casino Enghien-les-Bains (in the spa town just north of Paris) are the most accessible to Paris visitors.
Casino Barriere group
The Barriere group operates many of the most-prestigious French casinos, including properties in Deauville, Cannes, Biarritz, and other resort destinations. The group also operates hotels and theaters integrated with the casinos.
What sets French casinos apart
Strong integration with broader tourism: most French casinos are part of resort destinations rather than standalone gambling venues. Older European traditions: more emphasis on table games (especially roulette and baccarat variants) and less on slot machines compared to American casinos. Restaurants and entertainment beyond the casino floor are typically excellent.
Online gambling
France regulates online sports betting and poker through the ARJEL (now ANJ). Online slot machines and table games remain prohibited under French law. The online sports betting and poker markets are large and competitive among licensed operators.
Practical considerations
Minimum age: 18. Photo ID required at all casinos. Smart casual minimum dress code; some historic and high-end properties require business attire. Casino access fees (small, EUR 5-15) are common at higher-end properties.
Casino-and-spa tradition
Many French casinos are paired with thermal spa facilities, a tradition dating to 19th-century European spa tourism. Vichy, Biarritz, Aix-les-Bains, and Vittel all combine casinos with major spa operations.
